This year has been quite possibly one of the best years for the film industry in a since the 90’s. With many highly anticipated releases like Spider-Man: Far From Home, IT Chapter 2, the Lion King, and more, none of these movies have come close to receiving the praise that critics give to Joker.

Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, and Robert De Niro, the film takes place in Gotham City many years before it’s inhabited the Dark Knight. Some even speculate that a young Bruce Wayne may appear in the film.

Nonetheless, the film draws inspiration from a classic in cinema history: Taxi Driver. Starring Robert De Niro, Taxi Driver is the story of a Veteran post-Vietnam War who obtained a job as a taxi driver. Throughout the course of the film, De Niro’s character slowly descends into madness as New York City becomes overrun with crime and filth.

Joker is a similar story, diving into the mind of Arthur Fleck, a failed comedian who, due to multiple failures in life, descends into madness and becomes the Clown Prince we know and enjoy to watch today.

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and received the Golden Lion, which is the highest achievement presented at the event. Phoenix is already receiving praise for his portrayal of the Joker, after many believed he could not top the performance given by the late Heath Ledger, who had the role in the Dark Knight. Phoenix and Ledger were close friends, and Phoenix said that most times when he was filming, he felt like Ledger was right there on set cheering him on as he was giving the potential Oscar performance.

The Joker releases in theaters on Oct. 4, 2019 and is projected to earn $85 Million on opening weekend. Will Phoenix’s performance surpass Ledger’s? I guess we’ll have to find out on Oct. 4.
